Random Ramblings on BL Dramas – Japanese Microdrama Series 2024

In the past year or so, micro or vertical dramas have become very popular. Although I am not a fan of this less than three minutes per episode type of dramas, I have to admit I have found the western BL genre of these vertical dramas additive to watch because they are actually fast paced in story telling, so we can be drawn into the story very quickly right from the first minute. I do find this interesting because a lot of the traditional Asian BL dramas started off very slowly especially the campus ones, or mysteriously that it took a while for the story to settle down…

The western vertical BL dramas that have suddenly sprung up in the past few months are, to me, more like BL soap-operas, very straightforward and over-the-top, also very often illogical in their plotlines, but extremely hilarious… I guess this is because they are not bound by the traditional Asian BL series which are almost always typically “serious” dramas and where shy young protagonists are common place. So far the western BL vertical series that I have watched have adult actors which is a refreshing change.

Since I have already posted about the western vertical BL series that have become available in the past few months, I thought maybe I should dive into some of the Asian BL micro series as well. To be fair I have not watched any of these Asian ones myself, partly because there are already many proper Asian BL dramas around, and also mostly because many of them are not English subtitled officially, except the Chinese ones which I can understand without subtitles. The only reason I know of these Asian, especially the Japanese and Korean micro series is because I have seen them as recommended videos, usually the first 3 or so episodes combined as previews or teasers on YouTube.

Anyhow, I know there are micro series from Japan and South Korea from the YouTube recommendations, I have also heard there are a few from Thailand. However I have not seen any previews from any of the Thai ones, I will have to investigate further about them but I couldn’t be bothered at the moment, LOL… There are also a few from China, but quite deviously disguised as Taiwanese productions to protect themselves. Apart from these countries, there may be vertical series from other Asian countries as well that I am not aware of or have paid attention to so far.

I will start with a list of Japanese BL micro series that have aired or streamed in 2024 since this is the country that gave us the term BL. Although they are Japanese micro series, not all of them were filmed vertically, most of them were still filmed in widescreen format thus far, which is quite interesting. Also this may not be a complete list as the earliest series I found premiered in August last year, so I may have missed some that I am not aware of… Please comment below if you know of any other BL micro series from Japan last year that I have missed.
