Jinjiang Literature City 晉江文學城 is a Chinese website for self-publishing and serialising novels online targeting female writers and readers. It was established in 2003 and is now the largest Chinese ebook site with about 80% market share of all online Chinese novels. In the last few years, many of the bromance TV series in China were adapted from the BL novels published at Jinjiang.
At Jinjiang, the BL novels are categorised as 純愛 (pure love), and not 耽美 (danmei), well, we all know why, it is China afterall, LOL… In recent years, there are also a lot of complains from many writers and disatisfaction from readers as more and more restrictions and self-censorship are put in place as to what contents are allowed and what not on their website. If there are any “illegal” contents such as the writing being “too sexy”, the chapter(s) will be locked and nobody can read them! This led to one of their most popular writers, 水千丞 Shuǐ Qiān Chéng, leaving the website in 2016 and went over to publish at 愛奇藝小說 iQiyi literature website. The aftermath of that was 12 of her 14 novels published at Jinjiang were locked permanently there, but luckily are now restored at iQiyi.
Below is the current top 50 BL novels published at Jinjiang calculated based on a complicated algorithm taking into account things like how many people are reading the novel, number of chapters, length of novel, & scores from readers, etc.
