Módào Zǔshī 魔道祖師 is a historical fantasy BL novel written by Mò Xiāng Tóng Xiù 墨香銅臭, first serialised online from October 31, 2015 to March 1, 2016, and completed on January 1, 2018 with 7 extra bonus chapters 番外篇. You may not have heard of this novel, but if you watched a lot of BL or BL adapted TV series, and I say to you the 2019 TV series, The Untamed 陳情令, then you already know about the novel because the TV series was adapted from this novel!
The novel has also been translated into English as The Founder of Diabolism or Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. So far apart from the TV series, it has also been adapted into manga or mànhuà 漫畫 in December 2017, audio drama in 2018, and anime or dònghuà 動畫／動漫 starting also in 2018. The first season of the anime 前塵篇 was broadcast starting on July 9, 2018 until October 16, 2018 with a total of 15 episodes. The second season 羨雲篇 aired from August 3, 2019 with a total of 8 episodes. On August 7, 2021, the third and final season 完結篇 went on air with 12 episodes in total. There is also a chibi version of the anime called The Founder of Diabolism Q 魔道祖師Q (Q in Chinese = cute) that was broadcast from July 31, 2020 with a total of 30 episodes.
