Squid Game 오징어 게임 is a new 9-episode South Korean TV series that premiered on September 17, 2021. In less than a month, it has become the biggest ever launch series on Netflix, drawing the eyeballs of more than 100 million viewers around the world. It is a gruesome survival drama which has many viewers compared it to the 2014 Japanese movie As the Gods Will 神さまの言うとおり, or the 2012 movie, The Hunger Games. However Squid Game is set in the contemporary world and not as an alternate reality or dystopia, which makes it even more frightening to watch. As I have just read and enjoyed the Chinese BL novel, Kaleidoscope of Death 死亡萬花筒, a few months ago, which also has a similar plot setup of using children games as contests for survival, I thought I would give this series a go. I’ve just watched 4 episodes, and I can say on the one hand it is really addictive to watch, but also way too macabre! I won’t spoil the series here, but if you like Kaleidoscope of Death, you may like this too…
