The sixth season of Singing with Legends 我們的歌 started airing on July 21, 2024. However looking at the participants this year, it has lost the plot with quite a number of returning artists who had appeared in previous seasons and with only two artists appearing for the first time that can really be considered legends! And one of these two is a 3-member band from Denmark, Michael Learns to Rock. The other is Taiwanese singer Stella Chang 張清芳.
In fact I had sort of lost interest the past couple of seasons with the show losing its identity and appeal with less and less singing and more and more banters and turning the show into a comedic variety show rather than a singing show. The songs being sung or chosen also became less of the classic mandopops which was its original premise or they were being rearranged in such a way that the songs sounded operatic or comical! Like the Chinese saying 不倫不類 trying to please everyone. Then a lot of the upcoming younger participants came on the show just to promote their new songs or singing the current trendy songs on TikTok making this once unique show no different from other singing based shows currently on air.
Looking at this year’s participants, apart from the two first timers mentioned above, worthy returning artists include Penny Tai 戴佩妮 from Malaysia and Liu Yuning 劉宇寧 who both appeared in season 3 and were the pairing that year. The only other young artist appearing for the first time who is worth his salt is Malaysian singer-songwriter Firdhaus 菲道爾. Then there is another international artist Mariah Angeliq but I am not familiar with her. None of the others interest me as I don’t know or am familiar with any of them or their hits, one is even a Yue Opera 越劇 actor (what is she even doing on a pop song singing stage?), and most of the rest are better known for appearing on countless Chinese television shows rather than as well known singers or having hit songs outside China. Ironically the biggest Chinese pop artist internationally at the moment is Zhang Zhehan 張哲瀚 who is banned in China! Would have been great to see him in this show but unfortunately he’s not allowed to perform in China!
Having watched episode one from this season, it is ridiculous to see in just over 100 minutes runtime of the episode, only 5 songs were sung! I am not wasting my time to watch any of the full episode anymore from now on, seriously… I may even drop the show completely if the song choices are going to be same same with all the other singing shows, ridiculous or unfamiliar to me! I am also not interested in seeing Michael Learns to Rock being forced to sing Mandarin or Cantonese songs in future episodes, I would rather hear their hits sung in English! Speaking of inviting non Chinese speaking artist, I don’t know why they didn’t have the courtesy to provide an interpreter on site, it was so awkward to see the communication on stage and in the end Penny Tai being from Malaysia who can speak perfect English has to do the explanation for them!
