【Gardening】Primulinas and Succulents

My Primulina yungfuensis, 永福皮草 or 永福報春苣苔 in Chinese, surprised me by flowering on the first day of the new year! It was sitting on the second shelf in the corner of my balcony because it prefers shade as it is related to the common African violets. When I gave it a quick water during the Christmas and New Year period, I haven’t really looked at it carefully for a couple of weeks, so did not even notice its flower stalks forming, LOL… Then on the second day of the new year, I was watering it again and noticed some light magenta white things floating on top of the leaves, they are flowers just starting to bloom!

I have been getting into aroids recently. In the past, I did have a fruit salad plant, Monstera deliciosa, but I have to get rid of it as it was getting too big and took up too much space in my little balcony. I also had a rabbit’s foot plant, Maranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoviana’, for many years but it rotted last Spring which was sad…

Came across these two short videos about the different ways of propagating succulents yesterday. I love succulents and cacti, and have been growing them for more than 10 years, but having to grow them on a balcony, they are facing a lot of problems. The first being the less than required amount of sunlight they need, the fierce wind blowing along the wall of the building, the insect problems because they are in a seltered position under the balcony upstairs, and don’t get the rain as rain water is better than tap water for the plants… Anyway, that’s not the point of this post, LOL…

Very beautiful at this time of the year in early spring with the pink and blue tinge of colour! Just like its name “prolifica”, it is very prolific in producing young plants by itself by sending out stolons!
