Battle of the Writers รัก…ใต้บรรทัด is a 12-episode Thai BL series that premiered on July 29, 2024. It is adapted from the Chinese BL novel The Great Battle of Games 遊戲大作戰 written by Pingguo Shushushu (or Apple Treetreetree) 蘋果樹樹樹. Although most of the drama was filmed in Thailand, the period part of this drama was filmed at the Hengdian World Studios 橫店影視城 in China. I haven’t read the novel yet so don’t know if the drama is following the novel faithfully or not, however it is very odd to hear some Chinese dialogues in episode 1, LOL… So far no official OST has been released but the Chinese theme song from the Chinese audio drama from 2021 has been covered by the two leads recently at the launch on July 16, 2024… This Chinese version is used as the closing theme song…

4Minutes สี่นาที is an 8-episode Thai BL series which premiered on July 26, 2024. What is it with Thai BL nowadays? The trend is to release two versions of the drama, one cut and one uncut, which basically is a soft porn version to attract eyeballs! It is like announcing we don’t have enough good plotlines for the drama, let’s put in saucy scenes to make up for it, LOL… Here we now have a cut version airing on TV on One31 for 4Minutes and a sultrier version streaming only on Viu in Thailand.

It is good to see that Japan made diverse BL series like What Did You Eat Yesterday? a few years ago and now this new series with older actors and not always just university or young office workers BL stories.

Century of Love ปาฏิหาริย์รักร้อยปี is a 10-episode Thai lakorn series which premiered on July 10, 2024. This is another lakorn series with LGBTQ+ theme (well, BL if you insists, haha…) from Thailand’s Channel One31 following the very successful To Sir, With Love from 2022 and last year’s series Laws of Attraction. I have watched the first episode at normal speed and it didn’t disappoint, at least I didn’t have the urge to watch it at 2× speed like I do for many Thai BL series in the last couple of years and then drop it after just one or two episodes, LOL… Another thing I judged Thai BL series nowadays is whether the theme song is sung by a recording artist or not, if it is I usually have more confidence about the drama having interesting plotlines. On the other hand, if it is sung by the two male leads, then most of the time the drama is trying to attract audiences who just want to ship the two leading actors and not too worry about the plotlines!

Meet You at the Blossom 花開有時頹靡無聲 ก่อนดอกไม้…บาน is a 12-episode Thai BL series which will premiere on July 11, 2024. Although a Thai funded series, it is directed by Taiwanese director Nancy Chen 陳怡妤 and filmed entirely in China with a cast of mostly Chinese actors. It is filmed as a Mandarin language series but I believe there will be a Thai dubbed version for the Thai viewers. Meet You at the Blossom is adapted from the Chinese BL novel Blooming Flowers, Silent Sorrow 花開有時，頹靡無聲 by Shui Qian Cheng 水千丞, which was her debut novel but she is now better known for her very popular 188 series of BL novels. The opening and closing sequences have just been released with both theme songs sung by the two male leads…

I Hear the Sunspot ひだまりが聴こえる is a 12-episode Japanese BL series which premiered first on June 26, 2024 on the streaming platform U-Next and then officially broadcast on TV from the early hours of July 4, 2024 in Japan. It is adapted from the manga series of the same name by Fumino Yuki ⽂乃ゆき. There was also a live-action film adaptation of the manga series in 2017 called Silhouette of Your Voice ひだまりが聴こえる.
