My Grandpa is a BL Writer คุณปู่วุ่น Y หลานชาย Y วุ่น is a 10-episode (update to 12-episode) Thai family drama series which will premiere on May 16, 2026. This is not strictly a BL drama, more of a lakorn series with LGBTQ themed storyline… I am really looking forward to watching this series, but since the drama is airing on Thai PBS, it is very unlikely there will be English subtitles which is a shame!

As times change, so must Grandpa… Somsak, a renowned 75-year-old author of rugged, wilderness-exploring novels, with an ego that soars and a deeply conservative spirit, is facing a major crisis as the bank is about to seize “Saeng Karun House”, the family’s orphanage!

Saeng Karun House was founded by Luang Prasit Phithaya, Somsak’s grandfather. He was a compassionate man who wanted to give orphaned children a better life. Somsak is determined to carry on his grandfather’s great ideals. In the past, he managed the foundation with money from writing adventure novels, but recently his novels have stopped being published because they aren’t selling well. The only quickest way to make money is to write “BL (Boys’ Love) novels”, because younger generations are more interested in this genre than the novels he used to write.

Sar (Gen X), the eldest son, disagrees with his father forcing himself to write BL (Boys’ Love) novels. He and his wife, Mas, try to earn income elsewhere by selling traditional Thai desserts using recipes his great-grandmother, Saengiam, learned in the palace. Meanwhile, San (Gen Y), the youngest son, suggests selling the house to avoid the financial burden. Snow (Gen Alpha), the youngest granddaughter, asks AI for help finding a solution because she doesn’t want to lose her friends from the orphanage, amidst the opposition from different generations within the household.

His grandson, Safe (Gen Z), lends a helping hand. When this Baby Boomer grandfather and Gen Z grandson join forces, things get even more chaotic, because they come from different generations and have completely opposite personalities!

Somsak is struggling to adapt to the digital age daily, feeling like he’s going crazy. Meanwhile, Safe is finding his own way out. He knows that you can’t catch a tiger cub without entering the lion’s den. Safe decides to try dating Guy, a male friend who confessed his love to him, in order to gather factual information about gay relationships to use as material for his grandfather’s novel.

A chaotic adventure unfolds between a grandfather and his grandson, spanning two generations. This mission is immense. Will Somsak’s adaptation to modern times allow him to successfully write a Boys’ Love (BL) novel? And will the money from selling the novel help save the Saeng Karun House? Find out in… Grandpa’s Chaos, Grandson’s Chaos!

    • Thanks so much for this, I didn’t know Viu has it! Will try to watch it later today as currently I’m watching the live broadcast of Eurovision at this very moment, LOL…

      • Just watched the first episode, a good start but I thought it dragged on a bit too much setting up the backgrounds, LOL… Also I don’t quite understand the whole accident with the children plotline unless it leads to something important in future episodes. I felt it only started to get really interesting at the end of the episode, can’t wait to watch the next episode!

        • I really enjoyed ep 2, so funny! Especially Grandpa has the foresight to wrap the BL novel with newspaper so no one can see what sort of book it is, LOL… But he got found out anyway… And he chose an ABO one for his first intro into the BL world! Got to say Grandpa is very open-minded which is great to watch.
Also Great Grandma spitting out the sweet with Grandson holding a pot to catch the spit is just so hilarious… Think I’m going to enjoy the rest of the series…

          • Episode 2 was when it really took off. I love the grandpa picking an ABO novel and then trying to hide it from his disapproving daughter in law🤣 I adored the grandma and the clock although that did turn sad. I think it will be a fun show to watch in the end. I’m glad Viu got it since ThaiPBS doesn’t often license their stuff out.

  1. Ep 3 felt like the calm before the storm! The family accepted Guy so quickly, LOL… I am glad to see grandpa and Save’s parents did ask Save if he knew what he was doing. I think Save is already falling for Guy but not knowing it or refusing to accept his feeling! The children have moved on from reading to watching BL dramas, haha…

  2. This series is getting better and better… So finally the kiss happened at the end of episode 7, LOL… I love this episode’s plotline of exploring the issue of old-fashion outdated gender norms vs current gender equality of woman who can be as strong as man, not necessary in terms of physical strength but in so many other ways. Especially the parts where they recreated the original plot that grandpa wrote, then the version he revised and updated.

  3. Episode 8 is such a heartbreaking episode! The scammer kept saying nephew instead of grandchild which is already suss… But I guess when he’s so shocked, he didn’t pay attention. And there I was wracking my brain thinking who’s the nephew, have I missed something, LOL… On to the other plotline of Sun, that’s a plot twist I didn’t see coming, LOL… I thought he was working in another city or town, so didn’t stay in the family home. But it is good that Save has someone to talk to about his sexuality…

  4. A lot of serious drama in Ep 9 & 10. I thought the storyline of Sun was handled quite realistically as an Asian family, like they don’t talk things out openly until some catastrophic situation came up. I think Grandpa has already changed his view quite a while ago since he wasn’t opposed to the idea of writing BL, just couldn’t bring himself to admit it. Sorn I think was more jealous of Sun being smarter than him rather than him being gay, again using Sun being gay as an excuse! I’m glad they sorted this plotline in ep 10 rather than the last episode. So we still got Grandpa to stand up against his peer, the success or not of the novel, and Grandpa eyesight operation for the final 2 episodes…

  5. A few thoughts on Episode 11… Grandpa is also calling Save nephew? I guess it is a Thai word that can’t be translated into English? And backup, backup, backup, LOL… Something so important and Save didn’t backup the files, really, I know it is just something to create tension in the drama, but, LOL… Also my prediction is that the film company is going to adapt Grandpa’s novel into a series with Save and Guy starring in it, haha… Oh, and Guy is already calling Save’s parents mum and dad already? And the mother is so hilarious, she’s already claiming Guy as a son-in-law already, and the way she typed, LOL, shouldn’t she be doing all the typing?

  6. Final thoughts on Episode 12… Well, it was so obvious that the novel was adapted into a series, LOL… A great series with good story, not perfect but definitely 9/10 from me… The not perfect part is just the direction of some scenes which I felt, maybe it is just a very Thai thing, that the actors forgot their lines and not knowing what to do… For example after Save and Guy did their audition and saying goodbye to the producer (?) and they were just dilly dallying about, looking at each other, which was a very awkward scene to watch… I found that sort of directing very common in many BL series, LOL… As we get more and more Thai BL series the past couple of years, I found a lot of them are just fan-service disguised as a series which are just not the kind I want to watch, so a series like this is just right up my alley!
